Friends Since 2013 | Roommates | Adventurers | Legends
In the early days of Formlabs, three adventurous souls crossed paths and formed an unbreakable bond. From July 1, 2013 to November 1, 2014, Zach, Jory, and Craig weren't just coworkers—they were roommates, collaborators, and the best of friends. What started in the Boston-area maker scene has evolved into over a decade of adventures across the globe. This is their story.
Born an involuntary midwestern, Zach Both is a fearless creative and adventurer with no sense of self-preservation. After deciding college wasn't for him and a stint at Formlabs, Zach became a van life pioneer with the legendary Vanual website and was featured in the New York Times for his efforts. He later bounced around Las Vegas, NV; Portland, OR (where he built a yurt); and Santa Cruz, CA before getting rid of most of his possessions to become a true digital nomad. A generational talent, Zach has transformed the video production capabilities of Formlabs, Udacity, Y Combinator, and countless other tech companies. Zach is currently riding his motorcycle from Alaska to Argentina, with side quests to Japan, Iceland, Ukraine, Morocco, and wherever interesting jobs take him.
A true renaissance maker and jack-of-all-trades, Jory designs everything from leather goods to bags of all sorts. A magicomedian by training, Jory has honed his photography, video, and audio skills through years of world travel. These travels have sparked hobbies as varied as skill toys, playing Go, and synthesizers, and have spawned the companies Carry Cubo bags and his current leather goods venture Baxter Craft Co. Learning in the fires of Apple Store customer support, Jory has brought that passion and creativity to Formlabs, Walden Local, Proton.ai, and Grounded Labs. Jory currently lives south of Boston with his girlfriend, two cats, and five chickens, where he works as a contract director and freelance photographer.
A snail enthusiast who recently got too into birds, Craig always has somethings going on. Whether it's cultivating a garden, biking and kayaking in the sun, or atrophying his jaw by consuming too much soup, he brings dedication and humor to his passions and those close to him. He is known for quirky histories, always knowing someone for any job, and his decadent chocolate chip cookies. With a background in mechanical engineering and leading teams, Craig has developed products and build orgs at Formlabs, Liteboxer, Volta Labs, and Pendar Technologies. Craig currently lives in Somerville with his cat.
As Zach motorcycled down through Mexico, Jory and Craig paid him a visit in Mexico City. There, they witnessed Lucha Libre, biked through the city, birded in Chapultepec park, and visited the pyramids of Teotihuacan.
Zach rarely makes it to Boston. Even more rare is it that he is in Boston twice within three months. But that's what happened towards the end of 2025. Kayaks, ice cream, and biking were on the agenda.
On a brief trip to Boston by Zach, the trio found good opportunity for food, a walk around the esplanade, and of course a photoshoot.
Craig and Jory flew out to the west coast to visit Zach in Santa Cruz. The trio biked around town, ate weirdly bad Italian food, and enjoyed sitting around the fire pit. And no trip to Santa Cruz can be complete without visiting a buddhist monastery.
Zach, in a new camper van, made his way to Boston in 2021. They walked around Boston, worked out with Liteboxer, and played Mölkky.
When the pandemic kept everyone home for New Year's Eve, Zach refused to let distance dampen the celebration. He threw an epic Zoom party complete with a virtual Taskmaster competition that had everyone laughing, competing, and doing ridiculous challenges from their respective quarantine quarters. A pandemic can't stop friendship—it just makes it more creative. Click the preview image to view the video.
Craig and Jory flew out to Portland to help Zach build a yurt. Despite the cold, good progress was made. In their downtime, the trio ate their way through Portland.
Jory and Craig surprised Zach by flying to Las Vegas and breaking into his house one night while he was out camping. Zach was shocked to see them standing in his kitchen. Of course, the trio went to the Vegas strip (where Jory won big at the poker table) and hiked Angel's Landing at Zion National Park.
Back where it all started at the Formpad, the four bedroom apartment with a rotating guest in the spare bedroom. From the East Cambridge location, many parties were thrown, many brunches were made, and Jory rarely wore pants.
